Usual Thinking-What is running on the mind?

I have been a part of this industry for so long, I never got the recognition or the growth I deserve. Also, I have seen few who are not capable enough like me still they have reached a level in no time which they themselves never ever imagined. Luck is in their favor & I am not lucky enough. The kind of skill I possess is nowhere comparable to him or her still they occupy big positions and responsibilities and I am here to listen to them and act as per their directive. Strange life.

Some of these are common thinking & discussion we heard of or exchanged by many in the routine talks. As we add our emotions to work such kind of thinking becomes inevitable right?
Alignment

One important aspect which we often fail to realize during our professional journey is to align with the organization's core values and goals. As individuals we might be good at carrying out assigned tasks and performing well, it is essential to realize and evaluate if we are doing what is good for the company. Sometimes those kinds of things will push us to move away from our comfort zone and put us into disruption mode as well.

As long as we decide to serve and to be part of the organization, we should keep the organization's interest over our individual comfort zone which often we are not happy to do with.

Measuring

Most of us are not usually great in terms of maintaining records of our special and incredible performances and we are not good enough at self-marketing. Many times during performance discussions people do not have valid proof or support information for the kind of work they have delivered till now. We expect the companies & bosses to make a note of our performance and identify themselves and pass the rewards & benefits which does not happen easily right?

Whereas the business or the companies way of looking at individuals is completely different as they look for “horses for courses” logic due to which many times they do not get into details of individuals skills and capabilities unless it’s evidently shown in the work in terms of performance, attitudes, and behaviors.

Unless we accept these realities well and make sure we are fully evolved to cope with the modern-day challenges and business needs we will be on the list of people who hold the above feeling and keep talking about the same and continue to move on with the professional life with the if & but mode.

Story of MSD

Whenever people talk about cricket legendary names like Sachin, Saurav, Dravid & Laxman come to mind because of their remarkable individual performance and records. However, there is one name that uniquely stands out and is talked about always; MSD (THALA- MAHENDRA SINGH DHONI), be it international cricket or IPL till today. Did we ever think why this is so? What did he do differently than others?

The answer is simple - he handled different functions or activities so well & he was able to adapt well as per situations. The reason behind this if we think through is deep?

We will understand that it is mainly due to his versatility; which he is so good at in comparison to other legendry players and stalwarts of cricket.

Versatile

We all know the meaning of the word “versatile” right? However, let’s read this out once to have an exact understanding

“Able to adapt or be adapted to many different functions or activities”

I would say this is the need of the hour quality every individual should possess in order to shine in their professional journey. Then the results and elevation one desires will flow in their way for sure.

Approach

I believe we are clear on the importance of being versatile & how this shall benefit individuals. Apart from this what is the way one should approach our professional life towards a successful career. I find this answer in the MSD-UNTOLD STORY MOVIE scene. I am sure most of you would have watched this movie. And the scene, in particular, teaches us the lesson of how and when to play & leave the same according to the merit of the ball.

Inspiring right?

that’s what we should also do based on what the situation demands from us. Most importantly keeping the business's interest in mind over individuals. Above mentioned example is to make everyone understand easily. Depending on the business model and type of work we are in and the stage at which we are progressing in our career we can apply ourselves suitably to overcome the challenges we are in from time to time.

I have decided to quote a real-time example about an individual here who is so good at managing his career well & quite successful with his Versatile approach, with play, leave, defend and hit principle according to the merit of the challenges coming in his way.

Ambattur to Ambattur

Yes, you read it right, the start and finish of this topic are AMBATTUR only. This is a story of an individual who started his career as purchase assistant decades before and now has scaled to a level as VP (head-product development & marketing ) of the same company through his VERSATILE nature, and he is simple in his approach of handling challenges and business needs; when to bend, defend & drive forward based on the merit of the challenges, most importantly he is so good at acting and reacting to the timely needs of the company than individuals interest keeping the benefits of the organization first is his success mantra.

Now let’s walk through his career Journey till now…

He started his career as Purchase Assistant in a regional office at Erode with a basic qualification with a fresher background. With his ability to understand the business needs quickly, soon he moved to H.O of the same company for handling the European buyer account independently as a Sourcing merchant(executive).

His Hunt & hunger attitude offered him new opportunities outside and responsibilities of a different domain than from where he started. Soon he became a Fabric Technologist for a Srilankan company. As he evolved, his profile kept demanding additional skills and qualifications. Based on these needs he finished his Master’s degree to cope with timely business needs (MBA).

He moved up the ladder further with this simple and clean approach. He started taking more responsibilities to manage the product side as well along with customer handling other than being a typical fabric sourcing person. With his hunting approach, he got an opportunity to work in china, as he felt to cater additional knowledge and expose to the international textile/apparel market it is important to work there for some time which paid him the results in his favor to come back India as GM – (sourcing) for the same company where he started his journey as Purchase assistant.

Two things he always followed in his entire journey is he was versatile & worked like a man of the company which means he kept the companies interest before under any circumstances over his interest and views. By looking at his synergy and alignment, he had been promoted further as VP (product development & marketing). With his current role, he started adding values to companies with the concept of WOW (WAR ON WASTAGE) & other new initiatives. His success Journey continues….. Inspiring right?

It’s time to reveal his name, he is Mr.J.BALAJI, The company we are talking about here is one of India’s leading export factories in Chennai -Ambattur, am sure by now you all would have guessed it, yes it is AMBATTUR CLOTHING.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr.Balaji for being one of the role models to our industry & his success story brings him to the limelight for others to follow & walkthrough in his directions. Hope you liked this article and the concepts and thoughts being talked about with examples.

The true value of networking

Doesn’t come from how many people we meet,

Rather how many people we can introduce to others.

By leaving these simple thoughts am winding up this article, as always looking forward to your views & thoughts……………….
