How often we hear from vendors that there are no regular orders or business continuity from their buyers?

In today’s world it is important for vendors to realise that they should earn their pie of orders by offering relevant products. Product development is one of the key activities through which any vendor can add value to their offering & they gain orders as a result.

Unfortunately, Product development is not considered as an important activity by many of the vendors. Some of the vendors have realised the importance of this service & are reaping benefits as substantial orders.

As we all know change is inevitable, it requires a “PARADIGM SHIFT”

A fundamental change in approach or underlying assumptions from vendors
A fundamental change in approach or underlying assumptions from vendors

To begin with, a Vendor should start believing that product development is an investment & not a liability in terms costs & time.

Product Development can yield good results if we adopt the SMART principles.

Specific to buyer

Meet Quality standards

Achievable in bulk

Reasonable cost

Timely delivery

Specific to Buyer product development ensures better hit ratio.

Developments should be customised to the brands needs in terms of design, quality specification, price brackets & timelines they work with.

A Well-developed product is of no use unless it Meets the Testing Standards. Hence, the product should be presented along with a valid test report. This gives the buyers confidence to adopt the developments immediately into the range & place orders too.

Presenting a great sample, which is not Achievable in Bulk, is of no use. Hence remember this mantra “design for delivery” not for aspiration.

Cost is the primary driving factor in today’s business across all formats. Offering a product with Reasonable Cost by understanding your buyers costing logic will help in fetching the orders.

Developments are season and requirement specific. Timely Delivery will ensure order placements.

By abiding to the SMART principles, vendors will become the most valued vendor partner by merit. This will lead to business continuity & regular order flow.

The following 5 P’s are essential requirements for a successful product development team

Tips for effective product development

1)Best raw material (fabric & trim) presentation is the first step towards success for any product development.

Offer Piece dyed fabrics in the form of lab dips, in common quality along with quality feelers as per seasonal color palette, it can help to process the orders immediately if the buyers choose the shades from your color palette as the dye recipe is ready

Offer printed fabrics with digital print blankets & cad form for selection. Offering yarn dyed look designs in print like structures, dobby, jacquard, stripes, plaids etc.,

Yarn dyed desk looms can be offered in blanket form for qualities like plain & twill chambrays, fil a fil, structures, oxfords etc. Stripes & plaids can be offered in the form of cads. Offering print imitated designs in yarn dyed with limited number of shafts, self-structure designs using different drawing & denting techniques in weaving, there by cost & timelines are not increasing.

Maintaining trim catalogues of bulk trims used in production & presenting to buyers can help to attract them.

2) Presenting the physical development samples for review to understand the drape & fall of the garments. It is suggested to make 4 samples & present 2 samples to buyers, one for wearer trial & other sample for testing, for quick results.

3) Good product development should possess the following impressive design, right choice of color, craftsmanship of the sample, hand feel, product talking points, nice packing & great presentation by the right person. Most importantly the sample should be offered at attractive costs, so that buyer is compelled to place the orders.

Suriya

Nice narration with sensible inputs Ramesh. Good job. I myself have worked in different region in india like Delhi NCR, Ludhiana, Panipet and Jaipur and right now I am in tirupur. Here people are not focusing in PD. Mind set is like we are in to basics what could be offered differently n basics. For example factory doing around 3 to 4 cr business per year will have show room to display their products and new developments in north part of India. Where as in south even with double the amount of above said turnover hardly have any show room with them. This mindset has to change and we should take measures to enhance business by investing in PD.

thank you venkat bro, yeah it is a fact. hope the same will get changed soon..

It is yet another good endeavor to support people to know the importance of PD. Well presented...

SMART presentation.Very useful.

thank you ragupathy for your feedback..

One more important points is the feedback loop. As soon the product has been launched hed, the vendor also has to seek the performance of new products to get the feedback on sales, so that we the vendor can be ready for reorders or if there are inputs from the consumer to make changes in the next development. This will also help avoid any pitfalls in the next product development cycle.

i agree with you sethuraman bro, feedback is an important activity to go with... thanks for your input.
